Frequently Asked Questions About FTTP Connectivity

What is FTTP?

FTTP stands for Fibre to the Premises. It is an internet connection where fibre optic cables run directly to your property, ensuring data is transmitted using light signals for maximum speed and reliability.

How is FTTP different from other connections (like FTTC)?

The key difference is the use of copper wires. Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) uses fibre to the street cabinet, but then relies on older, slower copper telephone wires for the final connection to your home. FTTP bypasses the copper entirely, providing a pure fibre connection that is faster and more stable.

What are the main benefits?

Ultrafast Speeds: FTTP can offer speeds up to 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) and beyond, significantly faster than traditional broadband.

Reliability: Fibre optic cables are less susceptible to interference from weather or electrical signals, meaning a more consistent and stable connection.

Low Latency: The reduced delay in data transfer is ideal for real-time applications like online gaming and video conferencing.

Future-Proof: The infrastructure can support even higher speeds as technology advances, without needing to replace the physical cables.

How is FTTP installed?

An engineer visit is required. They install an external box (Customer Service Point, or CSP) and an internal modem (Optical Network Termination, or ONT) that connects to your Wi-Fi router. The process usually takes a few hours, and someone over 18 must be present to decide on the best cable route into the property.

Will I lose my landline phone?

FTTP runs entirely through the fibre cable and often doesn’t require a traditional landline. Some providers offer an internet-based digital voice service instead.

Do I need a new router or equipment?

Yes, you will need an ONT (modem) and typically a specific router compatible with FTTP, which is usually provided by your internet service provider.
